Surfing Maui
While the north shore of Oahu is acknowledged as the major surfing
area in Hawaii - and possibly the greatest in the world - Maui Island
Hawaii has many great surf spots as well. For example, Honolua Bay,
Napili Bay, Baldwin Park, and Hookipa beaches all offer great surfing
possibilities.. Many beginners stay at the more gentle beaches between
Lahaina and Olowalu, Maalaea Beach, and the beaches in Kihei. Maui
does have one spot, however, that has gained worldwide notoriety
over the last several years. This is "Jaws". Jaws is a
place where, on a good day, waves rise to 30-50 feet high! You can't
paddle out to Jaws because the waves are too big, so surfers are
using wave runners to pull them out. You can find Jaws about 10
minutes past Hookipa Beach on the road to Hana and then down a road
toward the ocean. People are reluctant to give the exact location,
but the locals know it well. Just look for the crowds on a good
day...
